Why Some Facebook Videos Can't Be Summarized (Private Groups, 18+ and 'Not Available')
TL;DR: A summarizer opens a Facebook link the way a logged-out visitor does. If Facebook hides the video from people who aren't logged in, no summarizer can read it. That covers private groups and friends-only posts, but also some public Page videos that Facebook age-gates or shows as "not available" to logged-out visitors. Test the link in a private browser window: if it doesn't play there, look for a public copy, or upload the file if the video is yours.
"This Facebook video is only visible to logged-in users (or was removed), so it cannot be summarized." If you've seen that message in PageSum, this page explains why, and what actually works.
Why Being Logged In Matters
When you watch a video on Facebook, you're logged in: Facebook knows who you are, which groups you're in and how old you are. When a summarizer fetches the same link, nobody is logged in. Facebook decides what to show based on that, and it hides more than most people expect.
We don't log in to Facebook on your behalf, and no trustworthy tool should ask for your Facebook password to do this. So the rule is simple: if a video doesn't play for a logged-out visitor, it can't be summarized from its link.
Three Walls We Ran Into While Testing
On October 6, 2026 we opened several video links from big public Pages in a logged-out browser, as a summarizer would:
- "This Video Isn't Available Anymore": an older Live replay link from NASA's Facebook Page showed this to logged-out visitors, with the suggestion to log in and try again. Facebook uses the same screen for removed videos and for videos it only shows to logged-in users.
- "Log in to view this 18+ content": a recipe compilation from Tasty's Page, a cooking video, was age-gated for logged-out visitors. Facebook doesn't say why. Videos that mention alcohol are a common reason, and age gates can depend on your country.
- Private groups and friends-only posts: these never play for logged-out visitors, by design.
Meanwhile, other videos from the same Pages, like NASA's current launch replays and BBC News clips, played fine. You can't tell from the Page alone; you have to test the link.
What the Errors Mean
These are the messages PageSum shows, and what each one means:
| Message | What happened | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| "This Facebook video is only visible to logged-in users (or was removed)…" | Facebook showed a login wall, an age gate or "not available" | Test it in a private window; look for a public copy |
| "This video link is not supported. Please check the URL." | The link isn't a video (a photo post, a profile, a group page) or it was cut off while copying | Copy the link again with Share → Copy link on the video itself |
| "This video has no captions… free plan transcribes… up to 5 minutes" | The video plays, has no captions and is longer than your plan's limit | The start is summarized; see the plan limits below |
Most Facebook links people paste are share links: 51 of the last 59 Facebook links summarized on PageSum were facebook.com/share/v/… or facebook.com/share/r/… links from the mobile app. Those work fine; they just hide where the video lives until it's opened, so a private-group video looks like any other share link.
The 10-Second Test
- Copy the video link (Share → Copy link).
- Open a private or incognito window in your browser (Ctrl+Shift+N in Chrome, Cmd+Shift+N on a Mac).
- Paste the link.
If the video plays there, PageSum can summarize it. If you see a login form, "isn't available" or an 18+ notice, it can't, and neither can any other tool that works from links.
What to Do Instead
- Find a public copy. Pages often post the same clip as a public Reel, and many creators and broadcasters publish the same video on YouTube, where it can be summarized from its link.
- Ask for the public version. For a group video, the person who posted it may have it on their Page or channel too.
- Upload the file if the video is yours. PageSum accepts video and audio files up to 50 MB in the File tab, so you can summarize your own recordings directly. Only do this with videos you have the right to use. A private group is private for a reason.
- Use a short clip for long Lives. For replays, see how to summarize a Facebook Live replay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can PageSum summarize a video from a private Facebook group? Not from its link. Facebook doesn't show private-group videos to anyone who isn't a logged-in member, and PageSum doesn't log in to your account.
Why does a public Page video say it's not available? Facebook shows some public videos only to logged-in viewers, and age-gates others. In our tests that happened with an older NASA replay and a Tasty recipe video, while other videos from the same Pages worked.
Should I give a summarizer my Facebook login? No. A summarizer doesn't need it for public videos, and handing over your password puts your account at risk.
Does the same apply to Instagram and TikTok? Yes. Private accounts and login-only posts can't be summarized from their links. Public Reels and TikToks work.
